MindBender: Calling the Question (Answer)

Question: Can you tell me the proper procedure when someone yells out in a meeting "I call the question"?

Such an outburst is not in order, and the chair should warn the member that it will not be tolerated. To "call the question" or move the Previous Question requires the member to obtain the floor and say, "I move the Previous Question." or "I call the question" if that is what your membership is familiar with. What it really means is, "I move that we end debate on this motion and vote immediately". It must be seconded and adopted by a two-thirds vote. If so, then the main question is then voted on. If the motion for Previous Question is not adopted, then debate on the main question continues.
